Les forces turques et leurs supplétifs syriens sont entrés samedi dans une ville clé kurde du nord de la Syrie à la faveur de violents bombardements, la Turquie se disant déterminée à poursuivre son offensive malgré le tollé international et les menaces de sanctions américaines.
A Ankara, le ministère de la Défense a affirmé que les forces turques avaient capturé Ras al-Aïn, ville frontalière de la Turquie. Mais les forces kurdes ont démenti et selon l’Observatoire syrien des droits de l’Homme (OSDH) et un correspondant de l’AFP sur place, les forces turques et ses supplétifs syriens y sont entrés mais les combats se poursuivent.
Voisine de la Syrie en guerre, la Turquie veut chasser des secteurs frontaliers la milice kurde syrienne des Unités de protection du peuple (YPG), qu’elle qualifie de « terroriste », et instaurer une « zone de sécurité » de 32 km de profondeur en territoire syrien pour séparer sa frontière des zone contrôlées par les YPG.
Depuis le début de l’assaut mercredi, 74 combattants kurdes et 20 civils ont été tués selon un dernier bilan d’une ONG syrienne, et 100.000 personnes ont été déplacées d’après l’ONU. Ankara a annoncé la mort de quatre soldats en Syrie et de 17 civils dans la chute de roquettes kurdes tirées sur des villes frontalières en Turquie.
