La déforestation au Brésil, qui compte la plus vaste surface amazonienne du continent américain, s’est accrue de 13,72 % entre août 2017 et juillet 2018 selon des chiffres officiels, soit l’équivalent d’un million de terrains de football, a estimé Greenpeace.
La surface déboisée sur cette période est de 7 900 km2 – ce qui représente 5,2 fois la ville de Sao Paulo – selon l’Institut national d’études géographiques, un organisme gouvernemental.
Pour Greenpeace, « c’est plus ou moins un million de terrains de football déforestés en seulement un an », a affirmé à l’AFP le coordinateur des politiques publiques de l’ONG au Brésil, Marcio Astrini.
Selon lui, la situation pourrait empirer si le président élu d’extrême droite Jair Bolsonaro concrétise ses promesses électorales d’amender certaines réglementations environnementales.
« Il a dit qu’il mettrait fin aux aires protégées, aux terres réservées aux Indiens, qu’il réduirait les inspections et les sanctions contre les crimes environnementaux. Tout ce qui pouvait réduire la déforestation auparavant. S’il élimine tout cela, ça peut déclencher une situation inimaginable », a affirmé M. Astrini.
Le Brésil a enregistré une baisse progressive de la déforestation entre 2004 et 2012, grâce notamment aux moyens de contrôle gouvernementaux.
Jair Bolsonaro, qui voulait fusionner les ministères de l’Environnement et de l’Agriculture, a laissé entendre qu’il pourrait reconsidérer son projet, qui a suscité un tollé au Brésil.
