Des inondations et des glissements de terrain provoqués par de fortes pluies au Kenya ont entraîné en un mois la mort de 194 personnes et détruit de nombreuses cultures, compliquant la lutte contre l‘épidémie de coronavirus, a annoncé mercredi le gouvernement.
Ces fortes pluies surviennent après celles de la fin de l’année dernière, apportant avec elles une seconde vague de criquets, dont d’immenses essaims se forment au Kenya et d’autres pays d’Afrique de l’Est. La conjonction de ces deux phénomènes et des retombées économiques du coronavirus pourraient provoquer une grave famine dans la région, redoutent des observateurs.
Les personnes vivant dans des zones inondables de plusieurs régions où les principaux barrages ont atteint leur capacité maximale ont été évacuées, indique le gouvernement kényan dans un communiqué.
“Jusqu‘à maintenant, 194 personnes sont mortes” victimes des pluies, inondations et glissements de terrain qui y sont liés, “particulièrement dans l’ouest et le centre du Kenya, ainsi que dans les régions côtières”, précise-t-il.
Il souligne en outre que ces pluies ont détruit 3.240 hectares de cultures et que les infrastructures permettant l’approvisionnement en eau de la capitale Nairobi, de Nyeri (centre) Kisumu et Nakuru (ouest), ont été détruites.
Le ministère de la Santé va envoyer dans les camps de déplacés des régions affectées des masques et autres produits d’hygiène afin de tenter de prévenir une propagation du coronavirus dont le nombre de cas détectés au Kenya est de plus de 500, dont 24 mortels.
