Les femmes saoudiennes sont autorisées pour la première fois à intégrer les forces armées du royaume ultraconservateur, qui s’est lancé dans un vaste programme de réformes économiques et sociales, s’est félicité mercredi le ministère des Affaires étrangères.
Ryad a récemment multiplié les décisions en faveur des femmes dans ce pays qui applique une version rigoriste de l’islam, mais les organisations de défense des droits humains l’accusent de réprimer parallèlement les militantes.
« C’est un nouveau pas vers l’émancipation », a écrit le ministère des Affaires étrangères sur Twitter, précisant que les femmes pourront seulement accéder aux rangs de soldat de première classe, caporal, sergent et sergent-chef. L’Arabie saoudite avait déjà autorisé l’année dernière les femmes à intégrer des postes au sein des forces de sécurité.
Sous la houlette du prince héritier Mohammed ben Salmane, plusieurs réformes visant à octroyer des droits aux femmes ont été engagées ces dernières années, comme l’autorisation de conduire ou de voyager à l’étranger sans l’accord préalable de leur « gardien » (père, mari, fils ou autre parent masculin).
Au cours de la même période, une vague de répression a visé plusieurs militantes des droits humains. Certaines d’entre elles restent détenues, comme la célèbre militante Loujain al-Hathloul.
Depuis la chute ces cinq dernières années des cours du pétrole, l’Arabie saoudite, premier exportateur de brut, tente d’améliorer son image à l’étranger pour attirer les investisseurs et les touristes.
