Le revenant André Schürrle, titulaire pour la première fois depuis octobre 2015, a ouvert le score de près sur un centre à ras de terre de Jonas Hector, bien servi par le Parisien Julian Draxler (19e). Mais l’Azerbaïdjan, l’une des bonnes surprises de la campagne de qualification, a égalisé sur son premier tir par Dimitrij Nazarov (31e) sur un service d’Afran Ismayilov. L’Allemagne n’avait plus encaissé de but depuis 678 minutes de jeu.

En fin de match, Jonas Hector a de nouveau centré à ras de terre pour le doublé d’André Schürrle (81e), le 22e but international de l’attaquant de Dortmund en 57 sélections
