Le classement élevé d’Obama résulte de bonnes notes pour sa poursuite de l’égalité entre tous les Américains (3e ), mais aussi de son autorité morale (7e ).
De plus, il a percé le top 10 pour sa gestion de l’économie (8e ) et son pouvoir de persuasion (10e ).
Cependant, ses relations tendues avec le Congrès (39e ) et ses politiques internationales (24e ) ont influencé négativement son positionnement.
En effet, pendant ses huit ans au pouvoir, Obama a dû faire face à un Congrès partisan et amer. Il a aussi perdu sa majorité démocrate au sein de la Chambre des représentants et du Sénat.
Son classement pourrait être revu à la hausse ou à la baisse dans les prochaines années.
«Évidemment, les historiens préfèrent analyser le passé avec un certain recul, et seul le temps nous indiquera l’héritage qu’il a laissé au peuple américain», explique au site Politico Edna Greene Medford, enseignante à l’Université Howard et membre du panel historique.
Le podium du palmarès reste inchangé: Lincoln, Washington et Roosevelt sont respectivement en première, deuxième et troisième position.
Le prédécesseur de Barack Obama, George W. Bush, a fait un saut de trois positions. Il passe de la 36e à la 33e place.
Le sondage a été mené auprès d’historiens présidentiels par C-SPAN, un service public consacré à la couverture de la politique américaine. Il s’agissait du troisième sondage de ce type et du premier depuis 2009. Le classement est établi selon 10 attributs du travail de président.
