Militante de droits humains, la jeune femme souffrait depuis de nombreuses années d’une malade chronique. Après la révolution ayant chassé Zine el Abidine Ben Ali du pouvoir, son nom avait circulé pour le Nobel de la Paix, fin 2011.
Avant la chute de la dictature, et malgré les risques, Lina Ben Mhenni avait durant des années témoigné sur internet des dérives du régime Ben Ali. Pour alimenter son blog « atunisiangirl », elle s’était déplacée dans de nombreuses villes défavorisées de l’intérieur du pays.
Munie de sa petite caméra, elle avait retransmis, via les réseaux sociaux, les premières manifestations de colère des habitants contre le pouvoir.
Après l’immolation par le feu du vendeur ambulant Mohamed Bouazizi le 17 décembre 2010, Lina Ben Mhenni avait été la première blogueuse à se rendre à Sidi Bouzid, berceau de la révolution.
Sa chronique de la révolution en français, anglais et arabe fut le point d’orgue de cet engagement contre la dictature.
En 2011, Lina Ben Mhenni en avait tiré un ouvrage, « Tunisian Girl, blogueuse pour un printemps arabe ».
Elle avait ensuite continué son militantisme pour défendre les droits fondamentaux en Tunisie, participant malgré sa santé fragile à de nombreuses manifestations et à des procès touchant la liberté d’expression.
Cette « voix de la révolte tunisienne », assistante en langue anglaise dans une faculté de Tunis, avait reconnu ces derniers mois vivre un calvaire, dénonçant au passage l’état des hôpitaux de la capitale.
