Au moins 71 personnes sont mortes jeudi et 28 sont toujours portées disparues dans le naufrage d’un bac sur le Tigre à Mossoul, dans le nord irakien où de nombreuses familles célébraient la fête de Norouz.
« La Défense civile a décompté 54 morts dans le naufrage de ce bateau qui transportait des familles et des enfants se rendant dans un complexe touristique de Mossoul », a déclaré ce responsable sous le couvert de l’anonymat. Selon lui, « 28 personnes sont toujours portées disparues ». « Le bateau a fait naufrage car il y avait trop de passagers à bord, plus d’une centaine », a expliqué à l’AFP un responsable des services de sécurité, présent, lui, à Mossoul.
Ces hommes, ces femmes et ces enfants, a-t-il précisé, traversaient le fleuve en direction de parcs aménagés où les familles piquent-niquent traditionnellement pour Norouz, le Nouvel an kurde décrété jour férié dans l’ensemble du pays.
Après d’importantes pluies ces derniers jours, les autorités avaient ouvert des écluses pour alléger la pression au niveau du grand barrage de Mossoul. Elles avaient publié des mises en garde au public, prévenant que les rives du Tigre seraient plus dangereuses avec un niveau de l’eau plus élevé.
Ce niveau de l’eau a également joué un rôle dans ce naufrage, a précisé le responsable à Mossoul. Des vidéos diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux montraient des dizaines de personnes flottant ou tentant de surnager autour d’un bateau, au milieu d’un fort courant.
