Après plus de trois ans de combats meurtriers, le maréchal Khalifa Haftar, homme fort de l’Est libyen, a annoncé mercredi soir la « libération totale » de la ville de Benghazi des jihadistes.
« Après une lutte continue contre le terrorisme et ses agents, qui a duré plus de trois ans […] nous vous annonçons la libération de Benghazi du terrorisme. Une libération totale », a déclaré le maréchal Haftar dans un discours à la télévision. Il a rendu hommage « aux caravanes de martyrs » tués dans les combats contre les jihadistes, ajoutant que Benghazi « rentre aujourd’hui dans une nouvelle ère de paix, de sécurité, de réconciliation […] et de reconstruction ».
Opération « Dignité »
Les forces loyales à Khalifa Haftar avaient annoncé plus tôt une importante percée dans les derniers bastions des jihadistes à Benghazi, faisant état d’une victoire « imminente ». L’armée nationale libyenne (ANL) avait également signalé la fin des opérations militaires dans le quartier de Soug al-Hout, ajoutant avoir avancé dans le quartier central d’al-Sabri, où se trouvaient les derniers jihadistes, selon le général Abdessalam al-Hassi, chef de la cellule des opérations.
Durant le printemps 2014, le maréchal Haftar avait lancé une opération baptisée « Dignité » pour reprendre la ville de Benghazi qui était alors aux mains de jihadistes. Parmi les groupes armés actifs dans la deuxième ville du pays figurait le Conseil de la Choura des révolutionnaires de Benghazi, une coalition de milices islamistes comprenant notamment des membres présumés de l’organisation État islamique (EI) et d’Ansar Asharia, un groupe proche d’Al-Qaïda qui a annoncé sa dissolution fin mai.
Un pays livré au chaos
La Libye est livrée au chaos depuis la chute de l’ex-dictateur Mouammar Kadhafi en 2011. Deux autorités s’y disputent le pouvoir : un gouvernement d’union nationale basé à Tripoli et reconnu par la communauté internationale et des autorités non reconnues basées dans l’Est, auxquelles est lié le maréchal Haftar.
