Le leader du Congrès démocratique de la Gambie (GDC, opposition), Mamma Kandeh, a rejeté les résultats des élections législatives du 6 avril, affirmant que le scrutin n’était ‘’ni libre ni équitable’’.
La commission électorale indépendante de la Gambie (CEI) a confirmé vendredi que l’ancien parti d’opposition, le Parti démocratique uni (UDP) avait remporté les élections avec une écrasante majorité de 31 sièges.
Selon Mamma Kandeh, cité par un communiqué rendu public samedi à Banjul, le président Adama Barrow a mis les ressources de l’État à la disposition de l’UDP et a activement fait campagne pour le parti lors de sa soi-disant « tournée de remerciement» à travers le pays organisée pendant la campagne électorale.
C’est contraire à l’éthique électorale et une telle démarche a faussé la sincérité du scrutin, a martelé Kandeh dont le parti s’est retrouvé avec cinq sièges. On ne sait pas encore s’il va déposer un recours auprès de la CEI.
En tous les cas, le bureau politique du GDC a annoncé qu’il convoquerait une conférence de presse dans les prochains jours pour donner la position du parti.
Jeudi dernier, 239 candidats ont brigué les 53 sièges de l’Assemblée nationale, lors des premières élections organisées depuis le départ de Yahya Jammeh.
L’ancien parti d’opposition, l’UDP, a remporté 31 sièges tandis que les cinq autres partis politiques et les candidats indépendants se sont partagé les 22 sièges restants.
Le Congrès démocrate de la Gambie (GDC) a remporté 5 sièges, l’Alliance pour la Réorientation et de la Reconstruction patriotiques (APRC de l’ex-président Yaya Jammeh) 5 sièges, Parti de la Réconciliation nationale 5 sièges, le Mouvement du Peuple pour la Démocratie, l’Indépendance et le Socialisme (PDOIS) 4 sièges et le Parti Progressiste du Peuple (PPP) 2 sièges. Le siège restant est allé à un candidat indépendant.
Conformément à la constitution gambienne, le président Barrow doit nommer cinq députés de son choix, complétant ainsi les 58 parlementaires appelés à siéger à l’Assemblée nationale.
Les résultats des législatives ont été proclamés par le président de la CEI, Alieu Momar Njai, qui a au passage déploré le faible taux de participation estimé à 42%.
L’Union africaine et l’Union européenne ont jugé le scrutin libre et équitable.
