L’accord de défense et de sécurité signé samedi par la Gambie et le Sénégal devait permettre aux forces de défense et de sécurité des deux pays de mieux faire face aux « nouvelles menaces », a estimé le chef d’état-major des forces armées sénégalaises, le général Cheikh Guèye.
« Il s’agit pour les deux pays de s’unir et d’œuvrer une nouvelle synergie pour lutter contre les nouvelles menaces, le terrorisme et la criminalité transfrontalière », a-t-il dit.
Le Sénégal et la Gambie ont signé un accord de défense et de sécurité, en marge de la visite officielle de trois jours du président gambien Adama Barrow au Sénégal.
« Compte tenu de la nature même de nos pays, la géographique qui nous lie, nous avons intérêt à travailler ensemble. C’est ça l’essence de cet accord », a expliqué le général Guèye à des journalistes, en marge de la signature de cet accord.
Selon lui, l’accord va permettre aux forces de défense et de sécurité gambiennes et sénégalaises de mener des exercices conjoints, des patrouilles communes et des patrouilles conjointes et des contrôles au niveau des frontières.
Le nouveau chef d’état-major des forces armées gambiennes, le général Masanneh Kinteh, a de son côté indiqué que cet accord « va donner une nouvelle synergie et hisser plus haut la coopération sécuritaire ».
Les « défis sécuritaires » entre le Sénégal et la Gambie « sont les mêmes, parce que partageant la même nature géographique », a-t-il soutenu.
