Le président soudanais Omar el-Béchir a déclaré vendredi l’état d’urgence dans l’ensemble du Soudan et annoncé le limogeage du gouvernement ainsi que des instances dirigeant les provinces du pays, secoué depuis deux mois par des manifestations réclamant son départ.

Selon un bilan officiel, 31 personnes sont mortes depuis le début des troubles. L’ONG Human Rights Watch (HRW) évoque le chiffre de 51 morts, dont des enfants et des personnels médicaux. Des centaines de manifestants, dont des chefs de l’opposition, des militants et des journalistes, ont été emprisonnés par le puissant service du renseignement (NISS).
Inébranlable face à ce qui constitue, selon des experts, son plus grand défi en trois décennies, le chef de l’Etat de 75 ans envisage de briguer un troisième mandat lors de la présidentielle de 2020. La seule façon de changer le pouvoir en place est de passer par les urnes, avait-il argué en janvier.
