Des braconniers liés à des groupes de trafiquants de drogue risquent de faire disparaître un crustacé très prisé par les restaurants chinois en Afrique du Sud : les ormeaux.
Ces ormeaux diminuent à une vitesse sans précédent, selon de nouvelles recherches menées par Traffic, une organisation internationale chargée de la surveillance du commerce des espèces sauvages.
Grands et ronds, ces ormeaux s’accrochent aux rochers dans les eaux peu profondes et infestées de requins, au large de Cape Town.
Durant ces dernières années, au moins 96 millions d’ormeaux ont disparu à cause du braconnage mené par de petites équipes de plongeurs locaux, selon Traffic.
Chaque année, quelque 2.000 tonnes de chair de ce crustacé sont séchées en Afrique du Sud, avant d’être transportées clandestinement à l’étranger, notamment à Hong Kong.
Là-bas, les ormeaux sont réhydratés et servis dans des restaurants. Traffic affirme que les braconniers sont liés aux fameux gangs de trafiquants de drogue du Cap.
Les responsables de cette organisation veulent que les ormeaux soient inscrits sur la liste des espèces menacées ou en péril en Afrique du Sud.
L’extinction de ce crustacé est fort probable, si des actions concertées ne sont pas menées pour contrôler les braconniers, selon Traffic.
